Why are long transmission lines
transposed and not shorter lines?

Answer:

Long transmission lines are transposed to reduce

the effects of inductive and capacitive coupling between the conductors.

Transposition is done by periodically swapping the positions of the conductors of a transmission line

to reduce crosstalk and otherwise improve transmission.
